How to Get Your First Freelance Client (Even with No Experience)

Everyone starts from zero. Getting your first client is the hardest part — but it’s 100% possible with the right approach.

1. Pick One Niche and Stick to It

Don’t be a generalist. Focus on one service — e.g. "email marketing for Shopify brands." It helps you stand out faster.

2. Create a Mini Portfolio (Even If It’s Not Paid)

Mock projects are okay. Make up a realistic client and solve a problem. Use Notion, Behance, GitHub, or even Google Docs to display your work.

3. Leverage Communities

Join freelancer Facebook groups, Reddit subs, and Twitter circles. Answer questions. Offer help. You'll attract attention and leads.

4. Send Warm Pitches

Look for people asking for help on LinkedIn or indie hacker forums. Send thoughtful, short DMs offering specific help — not a sales pitch.

5. Use Freelancer Sites Wisely

Start with low competition categories. Bid fast. Write personal, non-generic proposals. Focus more on building your first 5 reviews than money.

6. Ask for Referrals & Feedback

Once you get one client, ask them: "Know anyone else who needs this?" and "Could you leave a short review?" This snowballs fast.

Remember: The first step is the hardest. After that, momentum builds.
